Addie is a series of illustrated children’s books on addiction written by Genia Calvin. The series narrate the story of a ten-year-old girl who’s mum is struggling with addiction.
The illustrations use a stylized style with vibrant colors and strong contrasts. Despite the frequent presence of highly saturated tints, the boards convey a wide array of emotions, ranging from sadness and fear to joy and relief.
The story narrates the journey of the child of a parent who’s struggling with addiction in a realistic, down-to-hearth fashion. The books addresses the hardship of going through therapy, group counseling and dealing with a parent being in rehab. The highs and lows that Addie encounters along the way are expressed by the prominent use of colors.
